Now here's an album I can really sink my teeth into. We have here a melodic Polish trio of black metallers with some serious songwriting chops. These guys packed a lot of punch into a mere 6 song album.
This band is *very* melodic, yet not in an overly cheesy, commercially accessible way, though. I simply mean that they have a great sense for melodic riffing and utilize more dynamic drumming than in the typical black metal band. Cues are clearly taken from the likes of Immortal (whom they cover on track 6), Old Man's Child, and Dissection. Skilled performers here, really.
Upon first listening, expect to hear well-produced (though not polished) riff-driven black metal, mainly at mid-tempo. With that said, though, this band, as melodic as they are, do not shy away from old-school tremolos, double-kicks, and the occasional blast. In addition, the vocalist is very harsh, rasping and screaming with vitriol; he hearkens back to the greats of the second wave and never slacks off. Also pay special attention to the instrumental (track 4), a beautiful piece that intertwines crisp, clean electric rhythm riffs with leads played out on a classical guitar. Very atmospheric and a nice touch in regards to mental imagery, pulling the listener into Europe of old.
The only (minor) misstep here is the cover I alluded to, Immortal's "At the Heart of Winter". It's a solid enough cover, but it feels somewhat out of place, and after 5 high-quality originals, it was a bit of a let down to find the album closes with a fairly by-the-books cover. It's performed well, nonetheless.
I highly recommend this album to any melodic black metal fans, though those obsessed with old Dissection or modern Immortal in particular should really give this a shot.
