Do you want to hear one of the first death metal albums? No “Scream Bloody Gore“ and “Seven Churches“ aren‘t the only ones. Back in 85’ the legend Paul Speckmann had already compiled the classic songs for his debut album. Eager to get them on record, Bill Schmidt was convinced what Combat was offering wasn’t enough, and so nothing happened. Unfortunately not until 90’ did most get the pleasure of hearing the tracks. Master really never has been recognized as the world class innovators they are, only a few bands have mentioned them. The funny things is that most music in the death metal genre resembles their classic work. We as fans, as well as the other bands owe a lot of respect to Paul and what he helped to create. Well its almost better in some ways that they didn't become huge, because their music was meant solely for the underground.
It is hard to put it’s greatness into words, this album just has an unexplainable unique atmosphere, not present on most death metal albums. Paul Speckmann treats the listener with very distinct and harsh vocals. More harsh even than his vocals are his lyrics, very well written, from a fun and serious point of view. He makes clear his hatred and disgust for the society of America, as he even makes a mockery of the pledge of allegiance, which is both cool and a little comedic. They lyrics are also quite catchy, especially on “Funeral Bitch”, a chant along chorus that will stick with you forever. All the bases are well covered, religion, the government and so forth. As for the riffs, man is the guitar tone heavy as hell and way ahead of it’s time. The riffing creates a nice wall of noise, fast and chaotic, and composed wonderfully. Chris's solos are executed and time very well in my opinion, he does a phenomenal job. As soon as the drums come into play on “Pledge Of Allegiance”, you can tell Bill isn’t messing around, quite powerful. His pummeling and intense performance couldn’t be matched by to many out there . Everything just flows together wonderfully, they made history with this composition. Which makes it that much worse that they had internal problems, one of the best trios.
Basically there are no real flaws, the only thing that upsets me, is that it doesn't last longer. Best songs on here have to be, well all of them. I must say though the Black Sabbath cover, "Children of The Grave" is superb. The availability of this album isn't high, and took me quite awhile to find, but was well worth tracking down. As no death metal collection is complete without it. Have no fear though, Paul Speckmann himself said the first two classics Master album will be re-released this fall. So I hope I did the album justice, because as soon as I listened to it, it became a personal favorite. I know any fan of death/thrash, old school death, or just death metal will love this. Get it at any price!!!
