Recorded in Hungary anno 2020. Limited edition 100 red cassettes!!
Mistcavern is a black metal band from Hungary that is fairly recent in the black metal scene in the country. Forming in 2019, the band released a demo that same year that sounded really good. However, earlier this year, they released their first EP titled "Into Twilight", and just when you think the band couldn't get any better, Mistcavern surprised many folks with an EP that's even better than the demo. To see what I mean, let's check out the first track "Towards the Eclipse". The album begins with a soft and calming ambient piece that reels the listener in with its mystical atmosphere. This sounds nice, but eventually, it moves into the metal part. The guitar riffs sound very raw, but much like the ambient piece, it sounds a bit melodic and even easy-going, so it brings in a similar mystical and enchanting atmosphere to the track. The drumming is pretty basic, as its beat patterns are consistent throughout the track, but it does play some powerful beats that lead in the guitars and keyboards. Even the bass is pretty great, as its deep sound is audible through much of the track and follows along the guitars well. The overall atmosphere in this track is raw, but also atmospheric, and this sound remains consistent throughout the EP. "The Shielding Twilight in particular stands out as a personal favorite of mine, as its mix of raw black metal and melodic keyboards are perfect and execute this certain atmosphere the strongest. The instrumentals on this EP are very strong, and a lot better than on the demo. The vocals on this EP are also just as good. Angmar does the vocals on here, and much like in the demo, they're incredible. His vocals consist of the typical high-pitched shrieks that sound formulaic at first, but they actually enhance the tracks. A good example of this is in the track "To the Starless Domain". This track goes for a more melancholic atmosphere compared to others, and Angmar reflects this well with his echoed shrieks further enforcing this atmosphere, as well as even flowing well to the raw guitars and technical drumming. Angmar's vocal performance on this EP are just as good, if not better, as the vocals on the demo. In many ways, "Into Twilight" stands out as a stellar EP that surpasses the demo. Whether it be the melodic and atmospheric instrumentals or the powerful shrieking of Angmar, Mistcavern shows that they can subvert expectations and go above and beyond with their unique sound. If you're in the mood for some spatial and melodic black metal from this year, then this is an EP that you can't miss out on.
