A quite interesting work from the two representatives of extreme metal underground. Both at their early stages, although members of both bands had enough experience in other projects before formation of these outlets. Still prior to the release of this split Sargeist had just emerged with the debut full-length album "Satanic Black Devotion", while Horned Almighty had only a demo and an EP. These artists differ stylistically, but the general idea of the music of both bands is pretty much the same.Side A belongs to Sargeist. This material is a piece of raw and grim black metal. Actually, that's the trademark style of the band by that point. The music of the split resembles "Satanic Black Devotion". It won't be surprising, if the material of "In Ruin & Despair" was written during "Satanic Black Devotion" sessions. Here it's even rawer. So, it's classical black metal, primitive, monotonous and possessing utterly dark atmosphere. With its production the music sounds ugly and sinister. The rawness always underlines these qualities in black metal. Caustic vocals of Torog add more hateful moods. Still Shatraug creates the characteristic Finnish dark melodicism.Sargeist's part starts with the title composition, which is dynamic and vigorous. But gradually the music becomes grimmer. Slow and haunting melodies of "Questing the Blessing of Evil" do the first step in it. Then all the odium bursts out on "Profane Bleeding Call", which is performed in the most intense fashion with its higher tempo and dense riffing. After that Sargeist concludes its part with an impetuous "At the Altar of the Beast", which carries the moods similar to the opener of the split.Side B logically presents Horned Almighty. The music of this band is more of first wave black metal, as it's highly influenced by thrash metal, what is clearly noticed in the riffing and the rhythm section. Early Celtic Frost and Bathory are probably the most crucial influences here. The compositions are generally dynamic, they sound harsh and pushing. The least thing can be said even about "Degradation Song", which is based on lower tempo melodies. The sound is also raw, although it's less raw, than in the case with Sargeist. Anyway, the rawness fits the music of Horned Almighty too.So, these stylistically different bands presented the material, which had a lot in common. It's dark energy, the release is filled with it. That makes the split as holistic as splits can be. Both Sargeist and Horned Almighty demonstrated interesting material. Well, Sargeist is a pretty consistent band, it has always been about preserving the purity of its genre even despite the fact of being cleaner and more melodic from time to time. While Horned Almighty has become more rooted in modern sound as well as in death metal sound through its existence, so for black metal enthusiasts exactly this material of Horned Almighty should become a one of the most appealing.
