For Chilean metalheads into extreme metal, Slaughtbbath is a well known act. Despite this album being their debut, they have a handful of demos and splits where the formula has not changed a bit.
'Hail to Fire' is a simple and primitive statement of bestial black metal. The songs are short and to the point; 90% of the time the drums play only blastbeats and the guitar is on tremolo mode, yet they managed to make an album with enough versatility to not fall into the tediousness of playing the same thing over and over (like Von for example).
The production is excellent, provided by P. Clares and his DM6 Studio where the album sounds old and filthy but clear and powerful enough to feel it like a professional work. Everything is drenched in reverb for all the good reasons, the guitar/bass tone is perfect for the style and the drums are relentless and commanding; the vocals are as hateful as you can imagine and the performance is savage as hell. I bought the 7" edition digipak which is, as every Proselytism release, well packaged with extensive art, posters and stuff. It's really beautiful and totally worth the purchase.
Tracks like 'Awakened to Slay' will melt your face with its frantic and relentless pace, while 'Impaled Them' starts with a mid tempo beat more similar to what early Deicide and Sepultura did on its formative years; Blackburn might bring some Venom memories, especially its second half with features more sinister riffing and simple but menacing drums and the title track breaks a bit the shape here featuring an intro that get more distorted over time to finally reach the normal brutal pacing of the whole release.
The Slaughtbbath guys knows their stuff and of course are very into Blasphemy, Black Witchery, Archgoat, Conqueror and such, so this album won't get written in history for its innovation, but for his honest hatred towards mankind; there are not fancy interludes or useless intros/outros tracks, no bullshit to be found here, only merciless black metal on its most primal form.
Highlights: Awakened to Slay, Impaled Them, Burn the Traitors, Barbaric Cruelty Reigns.
