Sorgelig have quickly become one of my favorite black metal outfits. With members of other fantastic Greek black metal outfits like Isolert, Sores or Insanity Cult the quality of Sorgelig’s output should not come as surprise. After the amazing full length “We, the Oblivious” from last year they are already back with a short but tasty, simply self-titled EP “Sorgelig”. To keep the review as compact as the EP let’s fly straight into the music.
Starting with a hypnotic piano intro we soon get swept away by what be one of my favorite black metal songs of 2020, called “The Bastard Son of Pestilence”. This track has all the trademark elements of Sorgelig. An epic guitar harmony which catches the listener immediately on the barb, fast and furious tremolo attack, insane drumming and the sick voice of singer Odious. The other two songs are also of top quality, making the only real complain here the short playing time.
If you count yourself among the many that like your black metal varied in composition and expertly performed, “Sorgelig” will give you everything your heart desires. This EP balances heft and dexterity perfectly, churning out chunky riffs that never cease to carry distinct, ear-worm-inserting melodies that will stick with you long after it has ended.
The production is raw yet transparent, powerful but not too sterile. It seems that Sorgelig are going from strength to strength, and if everything turns out how it should, the future looks bright for those brave warriors. I for one cannot wait for their next material and I believe that they soon will be among the top names when it comes to the international black metal scene.
