Stormheit's national romantic music is like a missing link between pagan metal and Finnish pop rock. When I mentioned to the record label that I sensed a slight J. Karjalainen channeling in the song, I received a response about Mamba's use in advertising. After reading that, I can no longer listen to Syksy sieluni yössä without a Mamba association.
Everyone can take the song comparisons in their own way, but at least they bring their own soft personality to Stormheit's sensitive channeling. The autumnal mood pieces blaze with melancholy in their own delicate way, mainly with the acoustic guitar playing and the singing, slightly reminiscent of Quorthon's clumsiness.
What is lost in direct singing - or should I say in interpretation - is regained in a burst of emotion. And that's enough. It makes up for otherwise lukewarm arrangements and compositional pieces brilliantly.
I don't think the vocals on the album will warm up the entire audience, because such a strong personality always carries the risk of a double-edged sword. But it is what it is, and explaining or apologizing won't change anything. Stormheit operates naturally in their own way, and in the end, that's all that matters.
The problem with this little piece is that even though there's enough emotion and melancholy, the songs themselves need more meat around their bones. The disc spins smoothly, but as if leaving you hungry. As a kind of interim work, Syksy sieluni yöösä plays quite nicely, and in that sense it serves as an introduction to the expression of a unique band.
