I used to be a huge black metal fan in my teens and early 20s, however, it was limited as most black metal to me is dogshit. I cannot stand the hype around the first Mayhem album for instance. The big bands, Immortal, Emperor, Satyricon, some Gogoroth, Enslaved (Mainly later) and a few other bands were in my consistent rotation but, not much else than those. Then around the age of 20 I discovered all these incredible black metal bands who are not lame and have actual musical talent and care about musicianship. The likes of Dissection, Sacramentum, Ragnarok, Shub Niggurath, and Marduk (I came back around on these guys). The Moaning was one of those bands. Stupid name for a band but, this album just rips. It is so unique and have a few twists and turns on the album that keep the listener engaged. They have some hints of death metal but, I think that is mainly due to all the melody they have in their songs. The melodies are so well-written and showcase their talent as song-writers. I am mostly impressed with the guitar work. These guys can clearly play and I cannot express enough just how well these guys know how to write a song. They range from fast, tremolo picking riffs to some slower, more melodic ones in the mix. This guys also know how to write some heavy riffs because Of Darkness I Breed has one of the heaviest riffs I have ever heard. They took some real risks in the song-writing process on this album. Dying Internal Embers gets really bluesy at the start of the song and the riff doesn't sound black metal in the slightest but, man does it work.
Continuing from that note, I also enjoy greatly the vocals on this album. I won't try and mention names like a superfan would but, the vocalist is phenomenal. Sometimes black metal is ruined for me by the vocalist. Some are over the top, others sound like shit. This guy sounds like neither. He is very intense and fun to listen to. The drums are also very tight and have some great fills and really fast blasts. That is the word for this album, tight. Not only in the sense of it being cool and fun but, the sound is very tight. Most black metal has that undertone of shitty musicianship but, not here. Everything sounds so perfect for what they are trying to accomplish. I am vastly impressed by this album and recommend it to everyone who has not heard it yet. This is good black metal, which is just tough to come by in the myriad of Nazi bands (which blow me away every time I go to their page and see people praising them), fake satanists, jokes and overall piss-poor bands.
