This compilation contains all the worthwile efforts of Todesweihe with the "Nachtmahre" demo being both the defining element and the choice cut. After an introduction taken from Werner Herzog's "Nosferatu - Phantom der Nacht" (one of the best movies about vampires ever made), the band goes into a black metal frenzy that is almost identical in style to Darkthrone's "Transilvanian Hunger" (fast, primitive drumming, droning walls of sinister guitar sounds and harsh rasps). Nothing about this is new or groundbreaking, but the delivery is flawless. In fact, whenever I need a fix for my vampyric needs I choose this release over anything done by Darkthrone. The German vocals seek to emulate the phonetic style of what was really spoken back in the day in Siebenbürgen (=Transsilvanien), which was a German colony/protectorate at the time. My point is: there is authenticity to be found here, that only a German listener can fully appreciate.
The songwriting is basic, the atmosphere is spot on and the overall sound is a little bit cleaner and more powerful than what Darkthrone did in 1994. The first track "In den Nachthimmeln Transylvaniens" presents everything you can expect from this compilation. There are no surprises, nothing extravagant, no notable changes - listening to the first minute is all you need to decide whether this is for you or not.
I never understood how people could dismiss this band as Darkthrone copycats, while praising bands like Sargeist (=Gorgoroth copycats) or any other standard black metal band from Finland. If you are into Vampires, castles and Transilvania Todesweihe won't disappoint you. If you are searching for the next big avant-garde thing in black metal, keep searching...
