The new studio album of the early Norwegian black metal band Tulus! The 3-piece, consisting of members of Sarke and Khold, has created a masterpiece in their own inimitable style. Eerie & unique, come old old death.

Norwegian black metallers Tulus are back with their sixth full length album.
Doomy riffs set in an atmospheric and catchy beginning before upbeat drums pummel into a forceful onslaughts with maniacal vocals and grinding guitars drop us into a classic Norwegian black metal assault. Bleak, dancing instrumentals progress into a medley of ferocious and stunningly cold extremities with a warm bass tone cutting through the icy guitars and pounding cymbal hits with plenty of gruesome vocals alongside the instrumental savagery. The album has an amazingly contagious rhythm that really gets you hooked immediately and leaves plenty of headroom for some damned brilliant progressions.
Cutting grooves are a mainstay on this record with unrelenting instrumentals that use some experimental touches to add a discomforting nuance to the album while keeping that marching, militant black metal flame burning strong at the heart of the sound. Punishingly heavy but remaining upbeat, there is an almost joyful rhythm that fires through a blistering blend of tight guitar hooks, crisp drum work and ferocious snarling vocals. The rocky beats of this album are infectiously catchy and hit hard with the mighty Norwegian black metal vibes decimating all in its path, while retaining that approachable and actually rather pleasant sound.
Tulus have really grown as a band, developing that fierce grooving “black ‘n’ roll” feel akin to Slegest, Carpathian Forest, Satyricon, Mork and of course Khold (which shares an almost identical lineup). Ravaging wintery guitar riffs and subtle synths occasionally break free with a barrage of blastbeats beneath them, discarding the more friendly and upbeat sound, delving into a hellish inferno of totally astounding yet primal black metal traditionalism, without ever straying too far from the overall meandering beat of the general grooves. A ravenous and enjoyable sound that is definitely unique and recognisable in spite of the simplicity (at least in most parts), which does often subside for the band to draw on their instrumental skilfulness and deliver a tempest of gorgeous progressions, though these never feel obnoxious or out of place.
A fiercely ripping new record and definitely one that I think any Norwegian black metal lovers who enjoy some groove can sink into for a somewhat mellow yet still rivetingly extreme listen. Disdainful, melodic and incredibly well put together with a perfectly harmonious balance of upbeat groove, vicious assaults and bitterly bleak melancholia. An excellent new slab of pure Nordic brilliance.
