In a short amount of thime, Velm from Hungary released an EP, 3 splits and 2 full-lengths of which “Orkan” is one of them. The duo behind Velm, Tibor Terebesi and Tóth Gellért, play a melodic, epic and keyboard driven kind of Black Metal. And for nature’ sake, let me add Pagan as well. Although the keyboard is very present, it’s not like they are playing their dark art in a symphonic way. It’s more like a mixture of Burzum’s “Dunkelheit” and less fast Eldrig. It’s not all melodic all the way, as for example “Blue Tundra Icicle” has some fine up-tempo Black Metal parts. Although it’s not must have, it is a decent album.

Velm are a band from Hungary that plays a synth orientated form of pagan/black metal and this is a review of their 2016 album "Orkan" which was released by Neverheard Distro.
A very fast and raw black metal sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats and a few seconds later melodic guitar leads also make their presence known on the recording as well as bringing in grim high pitched screams and epic sounding synths.
A lot of 90's second wave influences can be heard in the bands musical style and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and there is also a brief use of spoken word parts while some of the tracks are very long and epic in length and at times the synths also bring in ambient elements and as the album progresses a brief use of clean singing can be heard and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and they close the album with a synth instrumental.
Velm plays a style of pagan/black metal that is very heavily rooted in the mid 90's era and also brings in epic sounding synths without ever losing any of the raw edge, the production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics are written in a mixture of English and Hungarian and cover Paganism, Occultism and Darkness themes.
In my opinion Velm are a very great sounding synth orientated pagan/black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Yuggoth On the Run" and "Orkan - Song Of Autumn".
