Black metal from France.
Raw CD Demo version from the 1996 release.
The last known demo of original material was 'La Morte Lune'. I know this isn't their most popular release but this one just blows me away. I have heard the original demo and I also own the bootleg re-release and there is a difference in sound. The original demo has a lower sound to the recording making barely listenable, especially if you want to decipher the tiny details. When production isn't good to begin with you grasp to every little thing that you hear, guitar tone, drums, vocals, bass, etc. Aside from the fact that the Tragic Empire version has 2 extra songs, it also has a louder mix to it and everything sounds in the kindest sense "clearer" than the original demo. If I had to choose between the two I'd take the Tragic Empire version 10 out of 10 times. The only thing making me even want to get the original demo is due to the rarity of it. An original copy of the demo would easily go for over 100 for sure.
As for the music, it's really fucking good. In some parts I would even say that it has a "thrashy" feel to it. Wlad's voice as always is in top form. This version of Warmoon Lord is my favorite, definitely better than the one on the split with Torgeist "Black Legions Metal'. The Dark War is a thrashy song with a mean solo tn the middle right after Wlad screams "Dark War!!!!". Just before that part he laughs a little which just makes it sound even more fucked up and shows that it was not done in many takes. L'Envol Du Corbeau (The Flight Of The Crow) is another great track and I believe it's sung in French but it's hard to tell with black metal and especially with raw production involved.
I Died From A Vampiric Grief just keeps adding on to the excellence of this album as a whole. The drumming on this song and the album as well is underrated, Vorlok really pounds the shit out of the skins. Even if it's not technically up there with the best it's very effective and he makes up for it with anger and passion. There's also a part 43 seconds into the song in which Wlad says "This Is Reaaalllll!" and that just floored me because that was how I always felt about Vlad Tepes, this is indeed real. Real fucking black metal!
Lastly, the last song and my top Vlad Tepes song 'Morgenstern' is an amazing way to end the album and the band's final chapter. The song has great shredding in the beginning up to 1:25 where the song has a nice break mosh part in which the song reaches its peak. You hear Wlad doing his vocals and Vorlok screaming high pitched in the background, this carries on to minute 3:08 and then comes back the shredding and high speed up to minute 5:40 with a riff change and the best riff in the song along with the sound of a knife being sharpened at minute 5:50 which gets louder as the song nears its end. When the song almost finishes the knife gets louder and its all you hear as it ends. Probably the best ending to any black metal song, ever. It also describes how fucked up they were. As Wlad said, "This is reaaalll!" Oh yes, real they were.
