Blood thirsty sacrifices performed by the Aztecs in pre-Hispanic times are the first images that come to my mind after being tortured by Xiat´s 2018 release “sumisión” that would translate “Submission”. This Mexican band does not fuck around, they go right to the point and as they say in their website, play fast or die!
To highlight: On one hand, Devastating instrumentation equals auditive massacre for this band, no joke, you should witness this high-quality death metal yourself. Xiat references a great deal of variations from the death metal subgenre like brutal death, grind death and grind core, it is not plagiarism, they homage the best and do it more than right. Tracks like “Atrapado” (trapped), “Paciencia” (patience) and “Conflicto” (conflict) are just some examples of the path of corpses they left behind. “Anti-clero” (anti-clergy) shows how merciless and uncompromised death metal must be done, is just an avalanche of riffs falling from the sky like chainsaws. The vocals, ah, the vocals, if we can call like that the non-human high-pitched shrinks this guy spits with hate. I would say the singing fits more a black metal band but who cares, Xiat is total madness and that´s what matters.
What I didn´t like so much: as I mentioned before this band does not fuck around and delivers the goods very quickly and with no anesthesia, like pulling you teeth just like that, only with a punch to your face that you didn´t even realized what happen. But there is something that I noticed right away; there are some flaws related to the cohesion of the album as a whole and also with some transitions from track to tack. For example, there is an interlude song called “Camino Eterno” (eternal path) that does not really set the mood from being devastated by raw death metal to listen to some weird sounds before the next brutal tune. Another flaw I noticed was in the track “Gerontotemia” (I don´t really know how to translate that!). This track is really brutal but it suddenly finishes at 4:16 and after that, there is an eight-minute atmospheric sound that let you down after the brutality you were experiencing.
To wrap up everything I mentioned about Xiat´s second release, well, be prepared to be devastated by these blood thirsty Mexicans, there is no doubt about it. The death metal manufactured here is very organic, not over produced and rotten to the core. But not everything is flawless, in my opinion, some tracks have unnecessary atmospheres that just don´t fit with the auditive massacre is being delivered. This fact does not ruin the experience as a whole but takes some points off in the final outcome. Promising band, is definitely on my radar and remember, play fast or die!
