Zelfhaat was formed in 2006 around the city of Tilburg. Their first release ‘Van Jammerklacht en Wanhoopsgeschrei’ has been in my collection for a few years and have been played a lot of times. Sadly, shortly after that release, Zelfhaat had split up. In 2020 Zelfhaat has been resurrected from the depressive depths. F. has recorded all of the instruments himself but he already has written the lyrics in 2008 so that was already done and dusted. F. said that this is a journey through the deepest depths of depression. F. has made a lot of music in the Dutch black metal scene and a few of his projects are one of my favourites like Mortifer and of course Zelfhaat. So when I got the message that there was going to be a new full length of Zelfhaat, I got excited. Kind of weird, getting excited about a depressive suicidal black metal record but eh, life is weird. The style of black metal that Zelfhaat used to make, has changed a lot. The current style that F. is making, focusses a lot more on the ambient style rather than the extremely raw black metal you’ve heard on ‘Van Jammerklacht en Wanhoopsgeschrei’. The vocals are more upfront in the mix rather than the distant fading instruments. The whole album is filled with these hollow screeches F. does and they do make you feel like you are in absolute misery. It is the same as the previous record, maybe even more, is that you need to listen to the record as if it was one song. No specific song stands out of the bunch. The songs flow perfectly into each other. The riffs throughout ‘Smarten van een Ontwijde Ziel’ are droning and mesmerizing. They give the already tortured vocals an extra layer of despair. So if you want to be dragged into despair and musically tortured, ‘Smarten Van Een Ontwijde Ziel’ will have all of those elements for you. A great album to lose your mind to and zone away for a bit.
