Another CD landed on the plate of my turntable. DEATH SCEPTER, because it is about them, is a project from the USA, which creates a very raw form of black metal. Unfortunately, there is very little information about this project, both on the web and in the insert you will not find much. The first release came out in 2018, and in the discography itself, so far, there are two positions, but they are two albums, so we can delve into these sounds for longer.
Spiritual Metamorphosis is an album, which contains 'only’ two tracks, but their total duration is over forty-six minutes, so set yourself for a longer listening, at which you need to focus harder, because this music does not enter as lightly as a 100ml of colored vodka drunk outside a liquor store. What this material presents is raw black metal with a bit of mystical atmosphere. The guitars create a dense and dirty wall of riffs, which is based on fast tremolo parts. There’s no room for slowing down or being merciful, but what surprised me was the perfectly fitted synth keys, which greatly increase the atmosphere and what’s interesting, despite the fast pace of the rest of the instruments, these ambient sounds even drag along at a mere tortoise’s pace. They give mystical character, but also a bit of melancholy, which makes the whole music very memorable. Those keyboard passages remind me a lot of BURZUM’s music, although not to such an extent that I would point a finger at it as a copy of Varg’s former achievements. It simply keeps a great, dark atmosphere and that’s how it should be. Playing drums here is fast and without any fiddles, to put it bluntly, it’s a primitive aggression, which, although it sounds monotonous, lulls into a kind of psychedelic trance, which makes these forty-six minutes of music pass by extremely fast. The vocal is also very furious, full of venom, and although not very clear it sounds as if it was ripped from the deepest abyss. I recommend listening to this music at night, if you haven’t got it on your shelf yet, I recommend buying it, because it’s a piece of good material, to which you will return often.
