Gjenferdsel "Varde" CD

I got this album from a friend, who told me I would probably like it. I had never heard of this band before and since there wasn't any band relating to it, I had to listen to it without any expectations.
My first thought when I turned on this record was: hey I recognize these vocals. They remind me of Corvus from Horna. I like to hear theat kind of high-pitched screams. And even though I don't understand any Norwegian word, I must say that the vocals sound very convincing. I guess whatever they're trying to express- probably the (somewhat standard) death-/suffering-/nature-themes - the vocals at least to their job. Easy to listen to, but not unique.
That last opinion sticks with me all the time when listening to this album. It consists of 10 tracks with an averaged length of 4 minutes per song, which are basically all up-tempo. The guitars only consist of dubbed guitar lines, but this works fine for Gjenferdsel. The riffs are not very repetative, they are quickly being followed by other riffs in a short period of time, yet returning enough to stick with a certain main theme. The riffs all have a viking/folky touch, which make it sound very melodic and powerfull.
Drums are also well made up and produced flawlessly, with a nice high tuned snare(drummer detail:P) From dragging parts with pounding double bass to blasting riffs, allmost every possible aspect of drums is being used. Nothing to complain about, really.
Overall impression: good album. I would recommend this album if you like that typical norwegian melodic riff-based black metal. Gjen is neither the best band Norway has to offer, nor one of the worst.
