VULCANOCIDE is a delightful trainwreck of an album.

The sophomore outing from Rotterdam based duo Vulcan Tyrant, VULCANOCIDE ponders the question – “what if we made 80s speed metal that sounded like lo-fi indie black metal?” It’s a question I’ve never thought to ask, but I’ll be damned if the guys aren’t on to something here. The intentionally gnarly production quality to the album reeks of a bootleg Bathory CD that’s been burned from a cassette rip – it’s noisy on an almost ridiculous level. But beneath the fuzz are galloping thrash riffs and the basic tenants of what one might consider melodies. “Eating Your Mind” gave me some old school Slayer feels, while “Medal of Honor” is definitely pulled from a Metallica tune that I can’t put my finger on, and “Your Eyes and Ears Will Bleed” is an attempt to sound like a forgotten Venom B-side. Nothing on VULCANOCIDE “sounds” good; it’s a sonically tough record to chew on. But if you can accept that for the mood they’re trying to set and focus on what’s underneath the fuzz, there’s something kinda works – somehow. It’s like the Vulcan Tyrant guys were in a rehearsal room somewhere and one guy said, “hey, really noisy 3rd generation black metal bootlegs are pretty cool”, and the other guy aid “yeah, but so is Show No Mercy…” And at that moment, a covenant was formed to somehow make music that made each other happy. VULCANOCIDE definitely checks the box for “this is something weird and different”, and at the end of the day I guess that counts for something.
