Silent Soul has released a handful of offerings over the course of thirteen years, including demos (Dualis, Unicus, Embyent, and Life Of Spectrum), albums (two in total: Embyent II, Without H., and then Requiem For Deads), EPs (Reliques), and a split (with Hecatombe). It is also one of the many projects born from the hazy mind of Gryp, a multifaceted artist who is both a musician (Litanie, Wintermoon) and an illustrator. Finally, it joins a whole family of bands that keep black metal alive, far from the limelight but with a passion and sincerity deeply rooted in their soul and heart that border on a profession of faith.
Released in 2011 and 2012 respectively by the now-defunct Unlight Order Productions, the label of Désolation, Gryp's former bandmate in Litanie and Wintermoon (that kinship continues), Requiem For Deads and Reliquiae are now brought together on a single CD by the indispensable Acid Vicious, who have given the packaging a particularly meticulous treatment (a double digipak with magnificent artwork). This collection, simply titled Reliquiae, offers us the opportunity to (re)discover these two creations which, as always, bear the unmistakable mark of their creator's talent and personality.
Compared to other projects by Mr. Gryp, Silent Soul at that time favored a more depressive expression, reminiscent of the New South Wales Australian scene (Austere, Pestilential Shadows...). The screamed vocals that pierce the night with terror are particularly evocative. These thin chords, these repetitive melodies bordering on a kind of hypnotic and morbid trance, are also present ('Their Death Is Mine'). The length of the tracks, all approaching ten minutes, confirms this suicidal muse that guides them, most often in a haunting way, like a slowly injected poison ('Always Alone In Death'), more rarely torrential ('Passage'), while 'Graves Of Mountain' or 'To Tanpol (Hommage...)' underscore the master's affinity for ambient music in general and desolate laments in particular.
The four tracks that make up Reliques present a noticeably different, though complementary, face of Silent Soul. The format is more compact (with the exception of 'Profond futur'), a repository of faster but no less misanthropic black metal, much like the painful 'Dégoût infini, haine mémorable' which overflows with the sinister and venomous poetry characteristic of a certain French tradition of dark arts.
We can only applaud Acid Vicious's initiative in releasing this beautiful collection, unearthing two precious relics, vestiges of an era, a time, whose dark charm seems to have vanished.
